Outreach Overview

The Outreach Program provides vital support services to students in South Dakota who are blind, visually impaired, or have multiple disabilities that include blindness or visual impairment. Certified Teachers of the Visually Impaired, known as Outreach Vision Consultants, travel statewide to support students, families, and educators.

Support services are tailored to meet individual needs and may include:

• Home-based infant stimulation concepts

• Classroom consultations focused on education and the Expanded Core Curriculum

• Participation in IEP meetings

• Individual assessments

 

Consultants also manage a Loan Library, offering educational toys, adaptive equipment, and learning materials for temporary use.

The Outreach Program partners with local school districts to support the development and implementation of effective educational plans for students who can be served within their home school district.

 

Frequency of visits is based on each student's unique needs, as well as input from families and school personnel. The program is designed to be flexible, responsive, and student-centered. All services provided through the Outreach Program are at no cost to the family or school district.
